M Adams 65 retired president of the Western Pacific Pacific rai railroad road here today He had suffered irom nom angina several years Mr Adams a national figure was well known both here and andin andin andin in Salt Lake City A native of Camanche Iowa where here he was was born January 3 1867 Mr Adams Adams Adams Ad Ad- ams literally started at the bottom in the r railroad becoming a messenger messenger messen messen- ger when 13 years old for lor the StLouis St St. Louis San railroad In 1886 he had a job with the general general general gen gen- eral baggage department of the Kansas Kansas Kansas Kan Kan- sas City Fort Scott Gulf Later he joined the freight department of the Southern Kansas ra railway Next he journeyed to Portland Ore and became became be be- came chief clerk in the baggage department department de department de- de of the Oregon Railway 1 Navigation company JOINS U. U VP UP P. P IN 1889 He remained with that firm until 1889 when he became division baggage bag gage agent of the Union Pacific with headquarters in Portland The Great Northern called him to Seattle in m 1905 to become assistant traffic manager but he hc left the Hill HilI road two years ears later to join an interurban traction com company pan in that section In 1910 Mr Adams moved to San Francisco to take over freight traffic I management for the Western Pacific a position he filled until April 1914 when he went to the Missouri Pacific as general traffic manager In January January Jan Jan- I uary 1918 he was made chief of inland in inland in in- land traffic traffie services for lor the United States war department and thirteen months later became traffic assistant in the southwestern region for the United States railroad tion RETURNED LAST JANUARY This service ended in October r 1919 and hc J n d' d the the Pa this time as Vice ice j e n ip jp charge harge of traffic He resigned in hi Jan Jan- uary 1927 to become president of the Western P Pacific cUic a position he relinquished relinquished relinquished relin relin- only last January wanting to retire to private life He had served the tle railroads 52 he wanted to rest Mrs Adams nee Josephine Moore of De Denver cr 1 was was was' with him when he died S Mr Adams was well known in Salt Lake and enjoyed a wide circle of friends friend and nd business associates associates' here herc He had made numerous visits here making inspection trips for the Western Pacific and for Cor the Union Pacific railroads In addition to his official position with the Western Pacific before retirement retirement re reo re- re he he was Was' president nt of the s Salt lt Lake Union Depot and Railroad company company com corn pany here Th The organization main main- thins and operates the depot which serves the Denver Rio Grande Western and Western Pacific rail rail- roads Funeral services will be conducted In Oakland Monday Monlay and Interment I will be in Portland Ore |
