1 really enjoyed myself but of course course It didn't seem like e Christmas at all I missed my Salt Lake friends and getting up early to see the sparkle of at happiness in my younger sisters' sisters eyes ejes and I missed the snow In Intact fact tact I knew I 1 would feel rather lonesome and homesick around Christmas time so I made up my mind to dash home for the day and i surprise everybody But alas the studio had other arrangements for forme forme forme me so there was nothing for me to todo todo todo do but to spend Christmas here and try to have a good time And I certainly succeeded I Christmas morning I spent at the home of Mr and Mrs Reginald Denny and oh what a wonderful time I had They had a huge Christmas tree beautifully decorated deco deco- rated I met a number of very fa famous famous famous fa- fa people and we all had a a glorious glorious glorious glo glo- rious time Mr and Mrs 1 Denny are the sweetest nicest biggest biggest- hearted couple 1 I have ever met The Dennys were exceedingly liberal liberal lib lib- eral with their gifts gilts and took de delight delight delight de- de light in giving to everybody The gifts ranged from a wonderful bottle bottle bottle bot bot- tle of imported Oriental perfume which was presented to me by Mrs Denny to two new stunning sport roadsters which Mr Denny presented presented presented pre pre- to his secretary and valet respectively lIe He ev even n gave a Ford I coupe to his chef I l' l dont don't believe I ever Knew anyone more generous gener gener- ous Both he and his adorable wife have fascinating English accents and its it's simply delightful to 0 hear them talk I really cant can't express my happiness over being consid consId- consIdered considered ered cred one of the Dennys' Dennys friends T There ere are aie five fi contest girls here now including myself and we we had hada a royal time exchanging gifts and talking g over Christmas at home borne The studio gave us a most de delicious licious turkey dinner on the lawn and quite a number of pictures were taken of us It was assigned to me to carve the turkey and by Judging the girls' girls appetites for a turkey dinner by my own I piled the plates high Later we were furnished a radio and we turned Inon in inon inon on our own home towns and danced the Charleston to home town or orchestras or- or My friends I must tell you about the comedies I am ann now working InThey in inThey In They are called the Sweet Sixteen Comedies made under the Blue BlueBird BlueBird Bird brand and I think they are run at the theatre in Salt Lake Anyway y I get along splendidly splendidly splendidly with Arthur Lake the youthful youth youth- ful leading man He is only 18 so you see we should be able to work very well together The director and production manager seem to tobe tobe tobe be pleased with my work so the they have decided to let me work as I leading lady for tor Arthur in the whole series I feel like yelling I Hooray because I learn so much In every picture Of course I no notice notice notice no- no tice my mistakes when I see the daily rushes and try to do better better better bet bet- ter in the next picture You see by viewing myself on the screen and noticing my mistakes I can take pains not to make the the- same mistakes again and thus I can Improve improve improve im Im- im- im prove my work This comedy work is pretty hard bard but It is so very interesting that I never tire of getting up early and putting on a makeup In the cold morning air fa for the mornings here are quite cool now I must tell you about a little bit I had bad In a picture which Mrs Wallace Reid making is She told me she had looked all over Hollywood Hollywood Holly Holly- wood for tar a girl with curls and one who was pretty at the same time One day she saw me In the cafeteria cafeteria cafeteria cafe cafe- teria at the studio with my curls hanging down donn so she must have thought that I I would do because the next day next day I had a call to work with her It was a scene in which I had to cry and believe you me I certainly did cry You see I was supposed to be in love with Ith a young fellow who gets killed As I had never had to cry before I asked them fo to pl play y Nearer My God to Thee on the organ and violin The They did that very sweetly and andI I F. mournfully and and I 1 concentrated on tho the music and started started to think of mother back in Sa Salt it Lake Lale I Immediately immediately Immediately Im Im- im- im mediately started to sob and oh goodness how I sobbed I 1 cried real tears No they fooling they were simply streaming down my face tace My ly mascara started to run Then I remembered that I 1 would look terribly if It I cried so hard but lo to and behold I couldn't stop Mary Alden who was playing play an Important important important tant part in the picture was sitting down in front of ot us and she kept repeating Hes dead hes he's dead and I simply could not stop Even after the grinding of at the camera camero had stopped I 1 could not control my tears Then Mary Alden Aide that sweet wonderful woman whom you no doubt saw in Siege made by Universal came up to me and tried to console me but that was wag sible Finally I left the set and walked around for awhile and d deciding de deciding de- de I had cried enough to last me for a whole year managed manage l to choke it off ort at last Jast Then I returned returned re returned re- re turned to my dressing room renewed renewed re renewed re- re my makeup and went back to the set to continue with my work You can laugh if It you want to but this Just proves that If It you concentrate on a certain thing you youcan youcan youcan can always get the result you are after Mrs Mis Wallace Walla a Reid was pleased and so was I because I have always wanted to world work with her and I hope my Salt Lake friends will recognize me in the picture as I had some somo splendid when you see them please remember that I am thinking thinking think think- ing of you all in Salt Lake and wishing you may be he as happy asI as I am this bats bright New Year DOROTHY GULLIVER |
