Another terrible dWd ha been added to te Wg list of crimes lskly committed Iu this city. Last evening, at a few minutes before 7 o'clo;k, one R. J. O'Brien, familiarly famil-iarly called "Mickey" by hfc acquaintances, ac-quaintances, aai 8U 6a employe of the lite (irande Western Hallway Company, acting in the capacity of night switchman, while on the way to his work, entered the "Western" saloon on Fifth WestStreet, bctwecn Second and Third Smith Streets, and was fatally shot by F. F. Raymond, Ray-mond, one of the proprietors. The details of hat occurred after O'Urien's entrance Into ttih Safion are dinicultto gather. A reporter of the 'eiV3 visited the plica this moruiuj wiiii a view to obtain correct cor-rect information coacernins tae tragic affair, but the hartenders were not over anxious to express themselves abaut the matter. It is said there were eereral eye witnesses wit-nesses tc I5e shooting; but for iaoc; proaawy bt-t known to themselves they all Ui-. apiieared, and their venins of thestorymay never be known unless un-less they are located by the otllcers au J midc to testify st Raymond's preliminary examination or trial. The circumstances seem to be these; As O'Brien entered the saloon sa-loon two mea were engaged lu playing play-ing a game of pool. .He was invited in-vited to take a drink with them, which he did. For a short time the play went smoothly enough, but was suddenly terminated by one of the players accusing the other of cheating. This the recused party emphatically denied, and resented re-sented with a storm of ugly epithets. epi-thets. O'Brien, who is represented as beingajocuWrand peaceable fellow, fel-low, smilingly enquired whom the abuse was intended tor. aad IT It was not a little severe. O'Brien was informsd that It was none of hl business. Raymond coincided with this view, and said something that nettled O'Brien's temper. O'Brien retorted by snapping his flnger in Raymond's Ray-mond's face and saying as he did so, 'You nre not worth slapping; tf you were I w ould slap you." It appears, ap-pears, however; that upon further provocation he did slap Ray-mond,and Ray-mond,and quick as a flash Riymond drew a revolver from his ocket and pointed it at O'Brien, firing three shots In rapid succession, the first shot takiug efl'ett in O'Brien's right breast, the second Hi the abdomen, while the third shot entered the wall in the northeast corner of the siloou. At the sound of the shots a 1 irge crow d of men from adjoining saloons and lodging houses gathered about the building, while thnse who wtre within fled precipitately to tafer quarters. As the firing ceased and quiet was restored the saloon was entered and O'Brien found lying ly-ing face downward in an unconscious unconsci-ous coaJltbn. When it was di-cov-ered that O'Brien was the victim the cry came "Who is the perpetra-trator? perpetra-trator? Lynch him. lynch him." In tiie meantime Riymond had sought refuge in the dining-room of the saloon, from which lie was rescued by police oincers Jenkins aud Thornton and placed in the police patrol wagon, "Black Maria" and hastened otT to the City Uall. By this tlu'.i Drs. Fowler, Fields, and Pinkerton, who had been sjmmsned, arrived on the scene, and after examining ex-amining the wounds of the un-formate un-formate man, informed his friends j that death was certain. O'Brien suffered intense internal pain and to alleviate his suffering an injection of morphine in his left ana was made, aud the now apparently dying man placed la a 'police van aud taken to St. Mary s Hospital. Raymond, although cognizant that tbeehots fired into his hapless victim's body must necessarily prove fatal, betrayed little concern about the matter, and when removed re-moved to the county jail last night said, "Well, I guess 1 am iu for it, anil must inskethebestof it." Raymond is known as a hard character. Last February he was arraigned on the charge of assaulting assault-ing a nun with a deadly weapon. The case is still pending in the courts. O'Brien died tbH afternoon between be-tween Ijand 2 o'clock, alter several hou rs of uncorsc.ousness. |
