Show 1 III Wind Hits City but Contrary To Adage Blows Nobody Any Good 4 i An ill wind blew over Salt Lake Friday and contrary to the proverb it blew no one any good It wafted into residences and buildings in all sections of the city a malodorous smell that defied efforts of both amateur and md expert to locate its source First shortly after 9 a. a m. m the odor rapidly grew stronger viler and more penetrating and within an I hour hundreds of telephone callers caners I begged Dr Willard city health commissioner to abate the nuisance Dr dispatched a corps of expert from the board of health offices with instructions instructions to scour the city and locate the source of the offending odor In an hour or so the they r returned holding their noses and shaking their heads in despair de de- de Several stenographers in downtown office buildings for a time suspected it was caused by their bosses' bosses pipes but it grew worse when the pipe smokers went out to lunch Not content with expressing themselves themselves them them- selves over the thc telephone dozens of ot indignant citizens called in person at t I the board of health offices and demanded demanded demanded de de- de- de that the odor be eliminated As the odor became more pronounced pronounced pro pro- and spread to all parts of the city many persons were reported to have become severely nauseated and appealed to physicians for aid Baffled Dr appealed appealed ap ap- ap pealed to State Chemist Herman Harms and to University of Utah chemistry professors for aid but they too were stumped All available board of health inspectors inspectors tors then were summoned Two of these however were suffering suffering suffer suffer- in ing from colds and it was feared they passed the source without noticing it Still unable to locate the source of the odor health officials appealed to Chief of Police William L.
