Show I I I GABRIEL FAHRENHEIT BAD BOY OF DANZIG A very verj quaint old letter has just been brought to America for tor publication publication tion by Professor Waldemar Wester- Wester gaard of the University of or California at Los Angeles Written in Danzig Germany in 1707 it bewails the misspent misspent misspent mis mis- spent youth of ol Gabriel Fahrenheit who later invented the mercury thermometer thermometer thermometer ther ther- and became a world famous scientist The letter was written by the boys boy's guardians to the Danzig Fahrenheit was 21 at the time and he seems to have been something of a young hellion The guardians recite the list of his misdeeds stating quaintly that he has behaved himsel himself him him- self sel regrettably and declaring that they can see ahead of him nothing except destruction and dire ruin I They urge therefore that the town I council put the lad under arrest and I sl ship p him away to the Dutch East Indies Fahrenheit remained in Germany Germany Germany Ger Ger- many and became famous The whole business simply proves once more that what is taken for badness In a young oung man Is very often only the over bubbling-over of ol a n nature na an- 1 ture tore that is a great deal stronger and more capable than the average How many many times that has happened in the worlds world's history The young oung man who will not conform whose effervescent spirits push him into follies and mistakes usually gets marked down as a wrong un and age and wisdom wag their beards at nt him dolefully But now and then he winds up by fooling everybody The bad boy is a problem of course But usually the problem Is seldom seen in quite the right light The real job is to turn the excess energy energy energy en en- ergy th that caused the badness into pro pro- e channels |
