Show Sports Here and There By Al Ablett v f I I missed on the Jenkins-Armstrong fight, but I set1 where the New York athletic commission has held up the purses and called the principals in for a hearing. I hope for the sake of the boxing game that they find everything was in order, because boxing at j the best has been in none to healthy a condition the past few years. That is one of the reasons why I think Dempsey is foolish to let himself be involved in j these matches that ho has been taking part in. They say that his last match in Detroit was as phoney as any wrestling match that was ever put on. I What the boxing game needs is a national boxing commissioner commission-er of the Judge Landis type. It was proposed in the last congress, and I think that in another year there will be one. Dempsey was the logical man for the job, but he isn't doing himself any good or helping his chances by taking part in these so-called exhibitions exhibi-tions between a boxer and wrestler. wrest-ler. Let us hope'that he sees the light. I was called to Nephi to referee ref-eree the fights on the Ute Stampede Stam-pede program. Pete Giacoma beat young Joe Louis in the main e-vent e-vent in eight of the fastest rounds I have seen in a long time. There was a capacity crowd, in fact they had to turn them away, and believe me they got their money's worth. This Ute Stampede has grown to be one of the biggest celebrations celebra-tions in our state. They told me that they had a $3200 house at the rodeo the night I was there and they had broken every record for attendance and volume of receipts. re-ceipts. I extended an invitation to the people of that section of the state to attend our Galena Days and was assured that a big delegation dele-gation would respond. Gemmell played Helper in the opening of the second half and Sammy Oliver pitched a steady game to win, 6-4. Frank Zaccaria of Gemmell and Car-navali Car-navali of Helper hit home runs. George Sluga and Ralph Fielder Field-er hit for Gemmell, Fielder getting two for two and Sluga two for four. This boy Carna-vali Carna-vali on first base for Helper is a fine prospect for organized ball. Six feet and 190 pounds; good arm and can hit; just 21 years old. Gemmell lost to Magna 7 to3 Wednesday as Leif Erickson let them down with two hits up to the ninth when they put together five hits for three runs. I don't think I have ever seen so many hard hit balls go for outs as I did in this game. Gene Robertson Robert-son and Sluga of Gemmell were especially affected. They both hit drives that ordinarily would have gone for extra bases ,but the wind held them and Mori, the Magna centerfielder, gathered them in. Shafer in right field for Magna robbed Fielder of what looked like a cinch double when he went against the screen to haul down his drive. Zaccaria of Gemmell turned in a gem when ho raced from right field into short center and took Barton's short fly. Zac and Sum-nicht Sum-nicht led the Gemmell hitters with two each. Wilson, Gemmell's second baseman, is still out of the lineup line-up with a sprained ankle, but is expected io be back Sunday against Provo. Billy Johnson had a bad toothache Wednesday, Wednes-day, but he has had the offending offend-ing molar pulled out and will be back Sunday. Gene Fish has a pulled muscle in his pitching pitch-ing arm. but hasn't responded to treatment. Don't know when he will be ready. Brigham City is living up to (Continued on page six) SPORTS HERE AND THERE By Al Ablett (Continued from Page One) advance notices in this second half. They beat Pinney 13 to 7 Wednesday night for the second straight win, and they have hit the ball hard in both games. The fellows tell me it is one of the best cities they have ever played play-ed in. The fans are for them, win or lose, and believe me that sure helps. They lost 10 games the first half but drew well and there wasn't a player that the home town fans condemned. Wonder what would happen if Gemmell lost 10 games. Boy, the wolves would have a field day. Provo is to be backed by Coors in the second half. They have new uniforms and in their new outfits they are out to win the second half. They have a good ball club and they will be in the race. Just to dispel some rumors that Gemmell isn't trying to win the second half, let me say right here that they are unfounded, and put this in your book: Gemmell Gem-mell will be in there when the curtain goes down. I have seen evt-ry team in the Pioneer circuit and Salt Lake Bees look like the best all a-round a-round club in the league. They are hustling and getting good pitching. On top of that, they have every break. Of course it is the club that hustles that gets the breaks. The difference in that league and ours is not so much in the brand of ball played, but the players move in and out between innings faster, and that makes a big difference in the playing time. Magna and Gemmell did that Wednesday and they played the game in one l ur and thirty minutes. Salt Lake continues to draw, averaging 3000 per game. Night baseball has been a God send to minor league play. Maybe I am wrong, but I believe everything looks faster under lights. Gemmell's amateur team is going great guns. Wednesday they won a 2-0 victory over McClanahan's in pitchers' duel which starred Louis Valdez. Pitcher Stan Long last Thursday Thurs-day turned in a stellar performance perfor-mance on the mound, limiting the D &RGW team to five hits but losing the game 3-1. In the state tournament the amateurs will give someone plenty of trouble. The entire Gemmell club team sends their sympathy to Merrill Johnson, the young Magna pitcher pitch-er who recently lost his mother. Will look at our Legion team today and tell you something a-bout a-bout them next week. Pat Comiskey is still going strong, and looks like the best young fellow to come along in the heavyweight division in a long time. He has speed and a punch; has shown the ability to take a beating and keep coming. He is being handled very wisely and when they turn him loose I think he will be ready. So put Say, they have been having some fine fights in Salt Lake City. Promotor Clint Ketchum and Matchmaker Phil Zwick have put on two swell shows. They have u fine openair arena on 25 South and State street, an ideal location with plenty of parking space and every seat in the place a good one. A recent show was a dandy. Every match found the boys throwing leather every minute. The main event was a headliner for any card in the country: Jackie Burke stopped Ivan Bland in the seventh round of a fine scrap. Bland looked much better than he has at any time I have seen him. He held Jackie about even the first couple of heats but from then, on Burke found the range and it was just a matter jf time. It has always been a mystery to me why the fans in this part of the country haven't taken this boy Burke to their hearts. He is one of the best in the country at his weight, and if I am any judge he is better right now than he has ever been. They will have to get a lot better bet-ter boys than we have around here to beat him. So if there are any fight fans in Bingham, it will pay you to drop down to .one of these shows.
