Show . ROOT WEEVIL IS DOING DAMAGE TO STRAWBERRIES Root weevil has caused serious damage to strawberry and raspberry rasp-berry plantings in the county this year, according to Joal C. Barlow, assistant county agent, who stated that the only control possible pos-sible is to kill the adult weevils before they lay eggs. The adults have been coming on top of the ground for the last week or ten days and will be laying eggs within with-in a few days. Bait should be applied ap-plied immediately and again in about two weeks. The bait must not be broadcast broad-cast so that it gets in the fruit. It must be placed among the vines so that some of it is at the base of each plant. While this requires considerable labor, it must be done if weevils are to be controlled. The second application can be broadcast broad-cast among the vines. Remember that the first bait should be applied immediately if control is to be had. It is also time to apply the second cover spray for apples and pears if you are using DDT. Every precaution should be taken during the spraying season to keep mites under control as field visits made recently have shown that mites are very prevalent in the county and are doing a great deal of damage where proper control has not been exercised. Peaches and prunes should also be sprayed for second brood twig bores as it is about time for these to emerge. The material used for this spray should be three pounds basic lead arsenate per 100 gallons water and, if mites are present, five pounds wettable sulfur. |
