Show Safety Tips STAIRWAYS These are the greatest hazard in our homes. They should slope not more than 30 degrees, de-grees, uniform risers 7 inches and tread 10 inches, exclusive of l'2 inch nosing. Enclosed stairways should have a landing of 30 inches or more from the doorway to the first step. Head room should be 6 feet to 6 feet 8 inches. Three or more steps should have a continuous continu-ous handrail with balusters close enough to prevent children falling through. Winding stairs are much more hazardous than straight ones. Good lighting, with a 2-way control system at top and bottom is very essential. FLOORS Different floor levels should be avoided. Also, slippery surfaces should be avoided. WINDOWS Slide doors and windows are safer. Windows which can be cleaned from inside or while standing on the porch floor are desirable. Windows swinging into the room create a bumping hazard, haz-ard, as do cupboard doors, w&ter pipes, etc. |
