Show PAY ROLLS UP REFLECTS ON OUTPUT OF METAL Utah's industrial pay roll responded re-sponded to the marked increase in steel manufacturing and metal mining and smelting during the third quarter of 1946 to jump $12,-000,000 $12,-000,000 above the average for the last 10 quarters and reach a total of $62,000,000, B. L. Flanagan, executive director, Utah state department de-partment of employment security, disclosed Tuesday. The pay roll was the highest since 1943, when quarterly totals varied between $62,000,000 and $66,000,000. Average for each of the last 10 quarters has been approximately ap-proximately $50,000,000. Highest total in the state's history was recorded in 1942, when industrial pay rolls topped $72,000,000, as against a prewar quarterly average aver-age of $25,000,000, Mr. Flanagan said. The payroll hike is attributed to an increase in steel manufacturing, metal mining and smelting and seasonal food manufacturing, he said, noting that services and trades pay rolls also had held up during July, August and September. Septem-ber. Included in the, pay roll are all industries, excluding railway and agricultural workers, domestic help and employes of public and charitable institutions. Business covered by the department also have increased during the past few months to approximately 10,000, compared with 7500 before the war, he said. |
