Show PRESIDENT SETS MOTHERS DAY SUNDAY, MAY 11 President Truman has proclaimed pro-claimed Sunday, May 11, as Mother's Mo-ther's Day. ' He called on Americans "to manifest through private and public pub-lic expressions the reverent esteem es-teem in which we hold the mothers moth-ers of our country." ' Mr. Truman proclaimed May 22 as National Maritime Day. "The future of the world, so earnestly sought by all, will ibe immeasurably advanced," he said, "by the cooperation of the several nations in removing excessive restrictions re-strictions upon international trade." He said the welfare of the American Merchant Marine is of "utmost importance" to the national na-tional economy, national defense, and friendly intercourse with other oth-er nations. National Maritime Day commemorates com-memorates the date in 1819 when the steamship Savannah put out from the Georgia coast on the first successful trans-oceanic voyage voy-age under steam propulsion. |
