Show THE AMERICAN WAY THE SIXTH COLUMN ft" George rwk """"I," "I mi i mi Him j The depression of the 1930's and the Second World War introduced an epidemic of new words, terms and phrases into the English language, lan-guage, not to mention a countless number of alphabetical bureaus. Your correspondent humbly begs pardon for having fallen a victim to this word-coining contagion, and, with your permission, he would like to inject still another new caption into the already badly overcrouded maze of recently coined names, to wit. "Sixth Column." Prior to the Second World War and while it was in progress, we heard much about '-Fifth Column" activities in Europe, and their paralyzing and devastating effects ef-fects upon Poland, Finland, Denmark, Den-mark, Norway, Holland, Belgium, France, and even upon England. Thanks to our Federal Bureau , of Investigation and other gov-; gov-; ernmental agencies, the "Fifth Column" was checkmated in America before it could get in its deadly work. But today in the United States there is a "Sixth Column." It is a threat to our welfare and security. se-curity. This "Sixth Column" is especially dangerous because as a nation and individuals we seem to be unaware of its existence. Many of those who make up its membership, member-ship, would indignantly deny belonging be-longing to it as far as they are concerned, it is a secret organization organ-ization and they are not even in on the secret. As I see it, this "Sixth Column" is made up of three principal groups of citizens: The First takes in those count-Americans count-Americans who see in the present situation, a failure of our Ameri- can System of Free Enterprise, and are willing to have it scrapped; scrap-ped; who have come to the conclusion con-clusion that "Capitalism" is dying on its feet; that the "Profit and. Loss System" is outmoded and that we must substitute for it, a And-Not-For-Profit." The Second Group comprises those millions who sit idly by, failing fail-ing to exercise their electoral franchise fran-chise bought for them at such great cost by the founders of this nation; who are too lazy, or too indifferent to put forth the simple effort of going to the polls to to vote. The Third Group rounding out the "Sixth Column" is the most dangerous because it knows what it is trying to do. There is neither indifference nor lack of knowledge know-ledge in this group. It consists of demagogues who have succeeded in centralizing more and more power in the Federal government the very thing which our Founding Found-ing "Fathers so sagely warned against. This is the group which is mainly responsible for the . retarding re-tarding of the reconversion program, pro-gram, for it has left no stone unturned un-turned to hamper legitimate business, which had it been left to its own devices, would long since have gotten on to full production. The first "Sixth Column" group, made up of the defeatists, perhaps can be weaned away from its false ideas and delusions of futility; futil-ity; the second, comprising the "Let - George - Do - Its" and the ''Don't - Give - A - Darns", perhaps can be aroused from its lethargy. As to the third group, there is no possible solution, except to oust it from the nation's capital. We can get rid of this third group of the "Sixth Column" if we exercise the good common sense next November 5th, to elect men and women to Congress who will truly .represent us, by putting a stop to our being regimented and pushed around by these un-elected, un-elected, unrepresentative bureaucrats. |
