Show Substance Found To Save Frozen Limbs Loss of limbs after exposure to severe cold is caused by the red blood cells forming clots which plug the blood vessels. This situation situa-tion can be prevented by injection of heparin, a substance which prevents pre-vents blood clots, the Surgeon General's Office reports. The facts were established by Major Nathan B. Friedman. Tests of the heparin were made on rabbits- After receiving re-ceiving the heparin their limbs were immersed in alcohol at a temperature of 24 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, a temperature colder than human beings are ever called upon to experience. The rabbits rab-bits seemed little worse off when their legs were thawed. |
