Show FRESn VEGETABLES BEING RAISED IN SOUTn PACIFIC About 5,000 tons of fresh vegetables veg-etables are expected to be harvested harvest-ed each month from over 10,000 planted acres on Guam, Saipan, and Tinian, the Foreign Economic Administration reports. Farm projects of this type are I set up by FEA wherever the Navy requests such a service. They save shipping tonnage, relieve the drain on native foods, and add variety to the military diet. Technical assistance, as-sistance, tools, seed and farm equipment are provided by t he agency. Truck gardens in the South Pacific netted about 5 million mil-lion pounds of fresh vegetables from July to October, 1944, including in-cluding cucumbers, watermelons, corn, canteloupe, radishes, lettuce, potatoes, cabbage and tomatoes. A few crops tried experimentally unpopular with the troops; spin-will spin-will be abandoned turnips are ach, peas and string beans take s too long to prepare and cook; and Irish potatoes, though popular, have proved unsuccessful. |
