Show HYBRID POTATO FOUND TO BE SCAB RESISTANT A new, Colorado-developed, hybrid hy-brid potato may be the answer to a lot of disease problems in spuds, says Farm Journal. Known so far only as TJSDA-6317, TJSDA-6317, this potato' is definitely scab-resistant. Also, it has not shown a trace of late or early blight, mosaic, or leaf roll, even when grown in fields where these diseases were taking a toll on other oth-er potatoes. With annual losses from scab alone running about 20 percent in the Uniterd States, the new variety vari-ety look like a good find. USDA 6317 is a cross of the Katahdin with a highly scab-resistant seedling. Produced by USDA and Colorado A. & M. crop breeders, it is a mid-season, white potato of good cooking quality. It also does well as an early potato. Last year the new potato held its scab-resistant record when triied in 14 states New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Vir-ginia, Indiana, Iowa, South Dakota, Da-kota, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona. Just how it will yield in all of these states is not yet known, but it did especially es-pecially well in Maine, Minnesota, Minneso-ta, Iowa and Colorado. A limited amount of foundation seed is available this fall. Some commercial certified seed should be ready by 1948. |
