Show Armed Forces From Harold Giles in California comes the following letter of appreciation: ap-preciation: Just thought I would drop you a few lines and let you know I really appreciate your sending the paper and to thank you and all who made it possible to send papers to the boys in the service. I have a new address now and I hope to get the papers here as they are surely welcome. " It has been three months since Mr. and Mrs. Orland Thorn have heard from their son, Ted, who is believed to be somewhere in Africa and having particpated in the battle bat-tle of Sicily. He was with the navy and when last heard from was on a mine sweeper, according to report re-port from his parents. Aviation Cadet Evan E. Allan has just completed the Army's Primary Flight training course at Thunderbird Field N. 1, Glendale, Arizona, and has now commenced his Basic Flight training at another anoth-er air field. Allan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James G. Allan of Mapleton, is a graduate of the Springville high school. When he entered the armed service Feb. 8, 1943, at Santa Ana, Army Air Base, Calif., A Allan was employed by Civil Service, Ogden Air Depot. Sgt. Max B. Whiting, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Whiting of Mapleton Maple-ton has returned to camp at Biggs Field, El Paso, Texas, following a few days' visit with his parents and other relatives and friends. He is with the First Engineers on a B-24 bomber, assigned to combat training. Joe Carnesecca, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carnesecca of Mapleton, Maple-ton, has been promoted to a petty officer second class in the Navy, according to word received here. He is now doing instruction work and was recently transferred from Norfolk, Va., to Oceana, Va. Robert (Bob) Mendenhall, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Mendenhall, has enlisted in the army air corps and was formally inducted into the service on Monday. He is now awaiting his assignment. Floyd Shepherd, Dean Hafen and Creed Diamond have completed complet-ed their naval training at Farra-gut, Farra-gut, Ida., and have been transferred trans-ferred to Treasure Island, near San Francisco, Calif., according to word received here. They were the only boys sent to this base from Farragut at the time. Allen Stewart has been promoted promot-ed to a first class private in the army, stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Bertha Stewart. Stew-art. Louis A. Johnson, son of Mrs. Henrietta Harmer, has returned to Luke's Field, Ariz., where he is stationed with the army air corps, following a two-weeks' furlough spent with his wife and mother and other relatives and friends here. Air Cadet David B. Welch, Jr., has completed his training at the University of Wichita, Kan., and received his classification for pilot training at San Antonio, Texas, according to word received here. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Welch, Sr. The army doesn't seem to keep Hoyt Baxter down when it comes to playing ball. He is still in the game, according to a report from his camp at Camp Beale, Calif., and recently was rated with a story on his pitching in the camp paper. A staff sergeant, Hoyt pitched for the Engineers and let no man reach his first base on a hit ball for the first six innings. He only walked two men and except for two hits, no ball went out of the infield, the report of the game stated. |
