Show i . I COKE PLANT AT GENEVA STEEL WORKS Is 1 K,,',i w - " i ill " " ! I The immensity of Geneva Steel Works, which is being erected by Columbia Steel Company, U. S. Steel subsidiary, for account of the Defense Plant Corporation, a Governmental agency, at a cost of more than $150,000,000, is indicated in this partial view of the huge coke plant. The Geneva plant will have four batteries of coke ovens with each battery containing 63 ovens. This largest integrated steel mill west of the Mississippi covers some 1,600 acres. The various installations within the plant site will be serviced by more than 65 miles of railroad tracks and sixteen miles of roadway. Over 400,000 cubic yards of concrete have been poured into the various structures and many thousands of tons of structural steel have been erected to form the numerous buildings on the gigantic project, which was ordered by the Government to provide steel for war shipbuilding needs on the Pacific Coast. |
