N. Hinckley, collector col-lector of internal revenue, that "many persons will have to pay penalties this year." Mr. Hinckley pointed out that out of an estimated total of 40,-000 40,-000 returns for 1940, only slightly slight-ly more than 6000 have been filed so far. The deadline is March 15. "If they all wait until the last few days, it will be impossible to take care of everybody needing help in preparing returns," the collector said. "This probably will mean unfiled returns when the deadline expires." An ad valorem penalty of 5 per cent of the amount of the tax, for each month until the penalty reaches 25 per cent, will be exacted exact-ed from delinquent taxpayers, Mr. Hinckley said. |
