Show FORWARD MARCH By II. S. Sims, Jr. p-rrry1 11 ' "" 111 1,1 ' ' ' ' rTTlR FORCE TO BE IvOKLD'S BEST IN 1942 Today U. S. plane plants are tnrnine'out about half as many military craft as the Germans; Lt is we are producing planes at the 'rate of about 20,000 per earDl,ring the year ending on the past June 30th, the V. S. produced 11,647 military airplanes. air-planes. By next summer the v s. will be capable of producing pro-ducing as many military air craft as Germany. However, the strength of our air force depends more on the qualify of the planes being produced pro-duced than it does on the number of planes. British Spitfires and Hurricanes proved this to the satisfaction sa-tisfaction of our experts in the Dunkuerque episode. As for quality, U. S. bombers bomb-ers are the world's best; our navy's flying boats are unrivaled unri-valed ; both the army and navy claim to have the fastest plane In the world; the army received receiv-ed on July 17th tho initial delivery de-livery of a new dive bomber which it claims "will outperform out-perform dive-bombers In use by foreign nations," and we have that daddy-of-all planes, the B-19, which is the world's largest plane, having a bomb capacity of 26 tons. And our military designers are not asleep, for, according to John J. McCloy, assistant secretary of ers) look like little brothers." Before, ending a review of our air strength, something should be said of our parachute para-chute troops. There are 1,100 parachute troops, composing the 501st and 502nd parachute battalions. In the near future, two more parachute units will be organized; they already have been authorized. The army air corps has also bought a few gliders for experimental experi-mental purposes. Army officials realize that gliders and parachute troops play important roles in modern mo-dern warfare and that experiments experi-ments in these fields are necessary neces-sary to bring the U. S. fighting forces up to date. For protection against enemy en-emy aircraft, the U. S. army is now arranging for the Installation In-stallation of "electrical sentries" sen-tries" along the V. S. coast. These electric sentries spot enemy planes many miles away and determine their altitude, al-titude, direction, and distance. On being warned by the electric sentries, interceptor planes will take off to turn back the invading invad-ing foe. Incidentally, the four interceptor in-terceptor command headquarters are located in the states of Washington, Wash-ington, California, Florida, and New York. Several weeks ago there was a move gaining momentum in congress to combine the army air corps and the naval air force into an independent branch of the service. The big boys of the army and navy were very much opposed to this, so on the 20th of June the secretary of war sent a letter to congress Informing the members that the army air force had been given semi-independence, semi-independence, occupying a position po-sition in the army similar to that of the marines in the navy. This blitz move of the army successfully undermined the position po-sition of those advocating an independent in-dependent air force, leaving the U. S. with the unique arrangement arrange-ment of an army and a navy air force. Nevertheless, through congressional con-gressional appropriation, the army air force will be about four or five times as large as the navy's air arm. In this way, we will get the advantage advan-tage of an independent air force, and at the same time will be allowed to keep our present organization which is so necessary during an emergency. emer-gency. That World Reform" fund that came home to roost pretty well plucked. Almost $2,000,000 trickled away in 20 years, but the handout hand-out committee couldn't find any more "worthy" causes and gives back the last measly driblet to the advanced thinker whose main idea was to save civilization. Read about him in The American Weekly, Week-ly, the magazine distributed with next week's LOS ANGELES EXAMINER. EX-AMINER.
