Show Kolob, Dan's Champs Meet in Softball Tilt Averett Yard - D. & R. G. Softball Teams Will Clash In Opening Game For July Fourth Sports Program Here Fourth of July celebration fans will be royally treated to one of the most outstanding sports feasts here this year when they will be given the opportun- ity of seeing two of the most out- standing Softball games ever played in this vicinity, tonight and tmorrow night. Kolob Lumber Girls, Utah state Softball champions, will play Dan's Market team of Seattle, Washington, Washing-ton, Washington state champs, in a two-game series beginning tonight to-night and winding up the series tomorrow night at the big celebration cele-bration program at the ball park. In addition to the girl's game Friday Fri-day night, there will also be a game between the Averett Coal Yard team, Commercial league leaders here, and the D. & R. G. team from Salt Lake City. The D. R. G. club has Leonard Stone, former Mapleton pitcher, chucking for thom, and boasts a strong outfit. out-fit. The game should be a close and intereting battle. In the tourney, tour-ney, the champs defeated Everett, 12 to 1; Tacoma, 9 to 1; and Bell-ingham, Bell-ingham, 11 to 3, to win the title. The Seattle champs have played play-ed five games this year, giving out 16 runs and 25 hits and scoring 33 runs while picking up 52 hits. They have won 12 games and lost 4 on their present tour through Oregon, California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. Outstanding pitcher for the Washington team is Alyce Johnson, John-son, husky feminine star who can handle most any other position on the team. Other members of the team include: Carol Richstad, pitcher; "Tuffy" Brown, colored left-handed chucker; Elsie Shaffer, Shaf-fer, home-run catcher; "Papa" Booker, catcher and 3rd base; Alice Powell, 1st; "Cool" Kuki, 2nd "Speedy" Bonner, short; "Stubby" Richstad, left field; "Ginny" Bonner, center field; "Sleepy". Walt, right field, and "Jumbo" Richstad, sister of "Stub-1 by," who plays roving fielder. This team played the Lucky IS Klub ot the Debutante league and defeated them 8 to 2. Another interesting item is the fact that the national champs the Arizona Ramblers defeated the Washington team 5 to 3, and the Kolob team 8 to-6. For Kolob Lumber, TJllock and Twelves, alternating on the mound, Patrick and Davis, catchers, will attempt to defeat the visitors for Utah's prestige in the two-game series. Other members of the squad are: Hinckley, Jensen, Johnson, Robertson, Robinson, Clayson, Wis-comb, Wis-comb, Weight, and Ewing. Manager Man-ager for the team is Andrew G. Peterson of Kolob Lumber Co., and Lorin Parks. Both 4th of July contests should prove very outstanding and fans can be assured of a real sports treat. |
