APPEALS FOR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES The local Parent-Teacher organization organ-ization is making an urgent appeal ap-peal to farmers in this community commun-ity and Mapleton for fruits and vegetables to be canned at the local canning center for school children's lunches. President Gertrude Clements of the Springville council, P.-T. A., Wednesday stated that unless more vegetables and fruits could be obtained, ob-tained, the school lunch project, which has been so popular in recent re-cent years, would of necessity be abandoned. Enough produce must be secured to fill 16,900 cans, which is the amount required for the number of school lunches furnished fur-nished last year. Growers will be given cash for their produce, payable next fall, or the amount will be applied on their children's lunches. Produce is to be taken to the canning center on South Main street daily except Saturday and Sunday. The center is also doing canning for Mapleton and anyone in that community with surplus vegetables and fruit are asked to bring it to the center. Farmers are asked to contact the center the day before produce is delivered. The center has already canned 3800 cans of peas and expects to can 5200 cans of tomatoes, 2000 string beans, 2600 corn, 658 chard, 650 small beets, 1300 applesauce, ! 600 peaches. 650 apricots, for the ! Springville schools, and for the Mapleton schools, 1000 tomatoes, 500 beans, 500 peas, 500 corn, 125 1 chard, 250 applesauce, 125 peaches, ' 125 apricots and pears. |
