Win ever Dons Although Springville earlier had cinched a spot in the Class A tournament, Friday's victory was a sound one against their rival Dons. Led by George Black, who has stamped himself him-self as one of the outstanding players in the state and who chalked up a season average of nearly 19 points per game, the Red Devils overtook a 5-2 lead in the opening of the quarter to pull out in front and maintain main-tain a commanding lead throughout the entire contest. Only in the middle of the final canto did the Dons pull within seven points of the Devils before be-fore Elliott Jordan, who played best in the clutches during the game, pulled the Devils out to a solid 67-54 victory with six charity tosses and a basket. Tough Meet Although no tournament is any cinch whether A or B meets, this year's Class A joust will be plenty tough with some of the bigger schools paired against the smaller schools like Springville and Spanish Fork. Whether the Red Devils will fair too well or not wjll remain to be seen, but Coach Garrett's five has shown plenty of scrap and determination and should give their "big brothers" plenty of basketball no matter who they are. Pairings will be released re-leased this weekend. Good Record This year's club boasts a good record. Although starting out a bit slow, the Devils chalked chalk-ed up 8 wins to 4 losses, two of which came at the hands of A schools, Tooele and Jordan, and another with the versatile SHS alumni team. For the Red Devils, this year's toumey venture will be the first in the Class A division. However, going to the state in basketball has been quite a habit for the Devils and particularly par-ticularly for Coach Alma Garrett Gar-rett who has taken four teams of the past five into the state |
