E" r Karen Weight , Joan Van Leuvan Mary Best Springville Girls Leave for Girls' State at USAC Three Springville girls will leave Sunday for a week's stay at Girls State at the USAC, under the sponsorship of the American Legion Auxiliary, an- enounces President Lois J. Child. Selected on leadership, scholastic record and activity, the three successful suc-cessful candidates are: Karen Weight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. LaMar Weight; Joan Van Leuvan, Leu-van, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Van Leuvan and Mary Best, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Best. Mrs. Beth Coffman has served as Girls State chairman. At the inaugural, a highlight of the week, Friday evening, Marilyn Thorpe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Thorpe who last year became be-came the first Springville girl to attain the position of governor of Girls State, will relinquish ' her crown to the new governor. The public is invited to attend this colorful event. Girls State was organized in Utah in 1947 to give young women an opportunity to learn the fun-dementals fun-dementals of good government and how it functions; to supply the answers ans-wers they may have on such questions ques-tions as: What kind of Democracy do we have in America?, What does responsible citizenship mean ? How can I as an individual inculcate incul-cate a sence of individual obligation obliga-tion to the community, state and nation ? It is now a national organization.. Mrs. Helen Howard of Riverton has been director of Girls State since resignation of Mrs. Golda Mc-Shane Mc-Shane of Salt Lake in 1949. She selects ten women to assist her as counselors each year. Mrs. Manila Brown of Springville has been invited in-vited to serve as counselor this year. Other counselors are from Provo, Salt Lake and Ogden. The Springville girl's stay at Girls State is financed by the Legion Le-gion Auxiliary at a total cost of $90 for the week and after the girls return, they meet with the Auxiliary to report on their activities. activi-ties. Last year, every high school in Utah was represented at the Girls State Camp and a total of 1500 Utah girls have had training to-date. |
