HANSEN CONFUSION OF TONGUES The sons of Noah were Shem Ham and Japheth, born about one hundred years before the deluge These first of all descended from the mountains into the plain, called Shinar. One by the name of Nimrod, who was the son of Ham, and grandson of Noah, became be-came a mighty man in the earth, and was great leader among the people. He built a number of cities of Nineveh, Rehobath and Calneh in the land. Out of that went forth Asshur and built the cities of Nineveh, Rohobath and Calah. And the people commenced commenc-ed to spread out in the earth, and they spoke one language. So it was decided by their leaders lead-ers to build a city with a gigantic tower, higher than anything on the earth, reaching into the heavens. heav-ens. As planne they set to work and labored diligently to build tins tower, neither sparing any pains nor being in any degree negligent about the work. And by reason of the multitudes of hands employed em-ployed in it, it grew very rapidly to a great height. It was built of burned brick, cemeted together with mortar made of "slime" asphalt or asphaltum. And the Lord looked upon this city with its great tower, and the people had become united and of one mind insomuch that what they imagined they could do, nothing could restrain them from accomplishing.. accom-plishing.. The Lord' then said: "Let us go down and there confound their language, that they may not understand un-derstand one another's speech." Thus confounding their language, producing among them divers dia-lets dia-lets and tongues, they were unable to understand the orders given one to the other, and this put a stop to the building of the "Towei of Babel," the name given it, meaning "confusion." From this time on the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth, and they went out by colonies colon-ies everywhere, and each colony took possession of that land which they lighted upon, and unto which God led them, so that the whole continent was filled with them; some passed over the seas m ships and inhabited other lands.
