Youth has passed him, riches have vanished, and love is dead. Only work remains. Rembrandt van Rijn, greatest Dutch painter, is driven to poverty by his enemies, and Amsterdam has forgotten forgot-ten the name destined to live forever. One last chance remains for the artist, to beg help from his former patron, the Duke of Orange, but Rembrandt is too proud to humble himself. Living among beggars, in rags, gin-soaked and feeble, only one glory remains, and that is the power of his brush, still the greatest in the world. Ceaselessly he paints, selling his canvases for barely enough to buy materials for more work. Once a great lover, he is now mocked by the beauties who pass him on the street. He is invited into a tavern by a group of roistering young artists, secure in their youth and in their first moments of Success. Ironically, they see in him the possibilities of a marvelous model.
