Show Upton Sinclair Meets Defeat In Calif ornia EPIC Chief Rolls Hp Highest Vote Recorded By Democrat. By MORRIS I)F, H.-WWN TKACJ V United Press Staff Correspondent SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7 (U.R) California has rejected Upton Sinclair and his EPIC plan by electing- Frank F. Merriam, Republican, as its povenior, but the embattled forces Sinclair led will carry on. In a series of statements and interviews, in which he virtually admitted defeat, Sinclair last night and early today reiterated his proposal to lead a recall movement move-ment against Merriam and proposed pro-posed to go upon a lecture tour to further his doctrines, which all but made him governor of California. Hiirli Total Kecorded Latest figures on the count of v ballots showed the former Social-ist Social-ist who turned Democrat to run - ' for governor, was only 1U2,975 behind be-hind Merriam, with 7080 of the i state's 10,721 precincts counted. The figures were: j; Merriam (R). 647,246; Sinclair j (D), 524,271; Height, (Common-i (Common-i wealth-Progressive), 155,519; Mer-t Mer-t riam's plurality, 122,975. I Sinclair rolled up a vote never approached before by a Democratic Demo-cratic candidate for a state office. He did it in the face of non-support ,if not actual opposition, from the Roosevelt administration and of active opposition from many ot the leading regular Democrats in California. He built his own organization or-ganization a personal "machine" and although a political lone wolf, he headed a pack of voters which may number as many as three quarters of a million when the count is complete. It seemed doubtful if Merriam-'s final plurality .could exceed 150,-(100 150,-(100 by any considerable figure. The tremcnodus strength shown by Sinclair as a sort of outlaw-Democrat outlaw-Democrat in a normally strongly Republican state, -was certain evidence evi-dence that; A powerful mass of voters is ready to follow advanced trends in economics and politics. That a general renovation of party policies in California is -demanded. It also seems to assure a -divided Democratic party in the state. Sinclair nominally will- be the head of the Democratic organization, organiza-tion, but actually will be opposed by the old line Democrats. Yet. he will head a personal organization organiza-tion probably more powerful than any the regular Democrats have ever built up on the Pacific coast. LOS ANGELES, Nov. 7 (UP) Upton Sinclair, Democratic nominee, nom-inee, retired to a secluded retreat early today, still refusing to concede con-cede the gubernatorial election to Gov. Frank F. Merriam, his Republican Re-publican opponent. "I can't concede the election," he said, after a series of radio speeches in which he charged voting vot-ing frauds and threater.ee recall action against Merriam. "1 haven't seen the figures." |
