Show SALES TUX DENOUNCED BY JORAH Currency Ref hit i o n Only Remedy, Says Idaho Solon. i WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (U.R) Senator Borah, Repn., Idaho, has thrown his support sup-port behind the cheaper money movement in congress with a statement warning that America is "traveling in a vicious circle toward economic eco-nomic collapse." The veteran western insurgent declared it was futile to try to balance the federal budget "until we settle the currency question. It cannot be done any more" than you can build a house upon a receding re-ceding sandbar." Reduction Urged He urged a $1500,000,000 reduction in government expenses and denounced de-nounced the proposed sales tax as a cruel levy which would further reduce purchasing power and deepen the depression. "It is going to be difficult and I believe impossible to balance the budget, certainly to keep it balanced, until you balance the budget of the taxpayers," Borah said. "Is thei-e any way to bring about the latter until you deviso a plan for increasing the prices of commodities? Is there any way to do that except through deflation, through adjustment of the money problem?" Losing Majrkets With the United States and France virtually alone in retaining the gold standard, Borah said nations na-tions on a "managed currency basis" were taking away this country's coun-try's domestic as well as foreign mai'kets. He said the Pacific coast fish industry was being lit- j erally ruined by competition of j cheap money nations. Farmers and other important lines of Indus- i try also are suffering. Regarding the sales tax, repeatedly repeat-edly advocated by President Hoover Hoo-ver since last June, Borah -said: duel Proposal "That is a cruel proposal in the light of diminishing profits, falling prices and decrease of purchasing power. At a time when under-con-sumption is a malady which menaces men-aces our whole social structure, there can be no justification for aggravating the malady. "If we can not stabilize prices, to lay on the sales tax which strikes at those least able to pay is to accentuate the fall in prices and discourage the decrease in purchasing pur-chasing power. We are travelling a vicious circle toward economic collapse." jj |
