MONTICELLO, Va., Oct. 20. Led by President Hoover, editors of representative American newspapers news-papers gathered at the old Jefferson Jeffer-son home today and repledged thei, faith to the support of national ideals. They 'dedicated, in the old Monti-cello Monti-cello mansion, a "Freedom-of-the-Press" room, in honor of Jefferson. It was Jefferson, courageous defender de-fender of freedom of speech, who saic : "Our liberty depends on-the freedom of the press, and that cannot can-not be limited without being lost." The new pledge of faith, signed by the president, was brought to' the shrine by airplane from Washington. Wash-ington. The ship landed on the lawn near the mansion. Speakers at the dedication included in-cluded Col. R. R. McCormick of the Chicago Tribune; Stuart G. Gib-boney, Gib-boney, Claude G. Bowers, historian, and James M. Beck, former solicitor-general of the United States. It was the first time in history any historic room has been dedicated dedi-cated to an ideal. |
