Show Stop The Speedsters With an amazing automobile casualty list of 994,823 in the United States in 1080, 32.500 of whom were I kiiiod and 902,323 injured, it behooves city officials and state governments everywhere to fortify the public against such outstanding losses. That citizens of Springville have escaped so miraculously mirac-ulously gives no credit to persistent violators of traffic laws, as there is not a day that automobiles by the scores do not pass through this city at a dangerous rate of speed. The police department here is helpless. No con-" veyance is provided by vhich the speedster can be j caught, and violations go on clay by day, and night after night. It is not an unusual thing for reckless drivers to pass through this city at from 50 to 60 miles per : hour. Statistics show that 31 per cent of all automobile fatalities and 21 per cent of the injuries of the country are caused by drivers exceeding speed limits. Since this is a high percentage of the total number of all accidents, it would seem reasonable that Springville should regard re-gard this type of violation as dangerous and endeavor ' to put a stop to it at once. Just what irteans should be adopted, to correct this a condition is a matter for our city officials to decide It has been suggested that the installation of at least one semaphore at a central point on Main street would be the most economical and effective way of bringing the s speedster to a halt. Whether this would be better 3 than to provide the police department with a car so that the violators can be caught, is something to be given due consideration. We venture the opinion that an investment in a small car in three months, would net the city more in fines than the total outlay, whether the semaphore is 1 installed or not. There are always plenty of violators i who have no regard for the red light, particularly if they know the police department has no way of catching . them. So we believe that a car suited to catch these violators would be a good investment in any event. J Of course, care should be taken not to Rive the city J the reprehensible name of attempting- to finance itself j by levying fines against the automobile public. On the j other hand some safety measures must be adopted if ! this city is to escape the .inevitable tragedies that ! mnke up the list of fatalities and injuries quoted above. ! 1 ' |
