Show LOCAL STORE JOINS J. G. A. Announcement was made Wednesday Wed-nesday by A. G. Thorn and Ed. Payne, for the past few years operators op-erators of the O. P. Skaggs' store in this city, of their affiliation with the Independent Grocers' Alliance. Al-liance. They will enter their firm, the Service Meat and Grocery company, com-pany, which was the firm name prior to their affiliation with the O. P. Skaggs system, into the new organization and will operate the business in that name, Mr. Thorn states. The I. G. A. is an association of thousands of grocers or "voluntary chain" operating in 42 states of the union. The Service Meat and Grocery Groc-ery has joined the alliance to secure se-cure the advantages of modern methods of food distribution, methods meth-ods which enable it to bring tremendous tre-mendous savings to its customers, it is pointed out. The company will participate in the alliance's program of masts buying, mass merchandising and mass advertising. The I. G. A. store owner docs not forfeit his individual store ownership, own-ership, Mr. Thorn explains, but is enabled to meet chain store competition. com-petition. This store will remain strictly a locally owned and locally operated business. The association with which this store is now allied has next to the greatest buying power of any organization or-ganization in the entire food industry, in-dustry, chain or non-chain, Mr. Thorn declares. Special store engineers are brought in to remodel new I. G. A. stores. The interior arrangement is featured by low,, open shelving and island displays which perm if time-saving self-service. All goods are plainly priced. The I. G. A. headquarters accepts no brokerage fees, but turns all the savings over to the I. G. A. jobbers, who in turn pass them on to the retailer and the consumer. The yearly volume of sales in the affiliated stores runs well over 600 million dollars. The I. G. A. is regarded as a revolutionary development in the food industry, acording to Mr. Thorn. |
