Show . : S 100 Rescued From Runaway Ice Floe; Disaster Averted 1 Fleet of Small Boats Arrive in Nick of Time; Three-Acre Sheet of Ice Breaks Away In Sandusky Bay. SANDUSKY, O., Dec. 27 (UP) More than 100 men and boys were rescued from a runaway ice floe in Sandusky bay near here today. The rescue was made just before the floe reached- the open waters of Lake Erie, where it began to break up slowly. Had the ice cracked up, few, if any, could have been saved. 1 A fleet of small boats rescued the men and boys who were fishing through the ice when the three-acre sheet broke away from the main ice. The boats were manned by policemen, police-men, fire emergency squads, and scores of volunteers. Rescuers Work Fast u The small craft were dragged across the ice adjoining the shore and launched along the line made by the ice floe breaking away. The rescue crew worked fast and without with-out fear of their own lives. Now power boats were available as all were frozen in. Coast guardsmen guards-men from Marblehead, O., joined in helping the fishermen from the ice. Carl Zimke, one of the rescued men, told the first survivor story. "The ice almost broke- under my shanty," he said. "It didn't make any noise, but jusjt started opening up. Before I could move the gap had grown too wide to jump. "The ice wa3 slushy and rotten and I was afraid it would break any minute. It took a long time, it Bccmed, to get any action ashore. "We waved and yelled and finally final-ly some people began to notice us, we were drifting pretty fast, headed right for the lake where we could soe the waves less than a mile away. "We started tearing down our shanties so we could have planks to hang to if the Ice broke under us.". |
