Rebellion In India Turns Into New Orgy Of Violence Injury List Mounts As Riots Persist; Protest Jailing of Leader. BOMBAY, May- 7 (L'.fi) The injury in-jury list mounted today as Indian passions rose in protest against the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi and the passive resistance campaign for Indian independence turned into in-to an oi'gy or violence. Reports from important centers such as Delhi and Calcutta, and from other points in India were that more than 150 persons were injured in outbreaks following Gandhi's arrest, at least three of them seriously. British officials kept a close watch on the country, and maintained main-tained troops at strategic points to break up groups of demonstrator demonstra-tor as quickly as they assembled. The attempts to preserve peace caused most of the clashes, since the Indians almost universally refused re-fused to budge without casting a few stones in the direction of the soldiery. The Hartal, or religious strike, which Gandhi's followers called through India in protest against his imprisonment, was especially successful here. Seventy thousand mill hands ceased work completely yesterday, and forced the temporary tempor-ary closing of 41 mills. Bombay, was tense, although violence vio-lence here was much less than reported re-ported from other sections of the country. Only two injuries were reported, one of them Prof. George Derger. an European, who was struck by a rock while motoring in the mill area. |
