Show When Wages Are Reduced - President William Green of the American Federation of ,' Labor, joined by Senator Wagner of New York, appeals to , Washington for a general industrial conference to maintain existing wage levels. ;'! Despite the lip service that has been given the no-wage 1 reduction slogan, industry as a whole has cut wages sharply in the past year. The loss to the workers in 1930 has been estimated at $8,000,000,000. In countless cases where rates have not been reduced men have been put on part-time work, and the effect is the same. As President Green points out, laboring men these days are saving what they earn and are refusing to spend a cent , more than they have to. That fact in itself goes a long way to explain the slump in consumer-demand for manufactured articles. Any further wage cuts will only, accentuate it. |
