Show UTAH PROJECT ENDORSED BY CABINET MAN WASHINGTON, D. C, Sept. 24. Another step towards the realization reali-zation of the proposed Provo-Weber unit of the Great Salt lake reclamation reclama-tion project including the diking of the Utah lake and the reclamation of the Provo bay was taken Tuesday when a recommendation was sent from the interior department to the budget bureau favoring a liberal appropriation by the next congress for beginning work ou the Provo-Weber Provo-Weber unit. This would indicate that the secretary sec-retary of the interior has sanctioned and approved the plan adopted by the Utah Water Storage commission commis-sion aud which received the endorsement en-dorsement of the officials of the reclamation service bureau a few days ago. The recommendation from the interior in-terior department would also indicate indi-cate that the director of the budget has been entrusted with the task of formulating the estimate to be sent to congress the first week of its session in December. Departmental recommendations to the budget bureau are confidential, but it is understood, on what is regarded re-garded as good authority, that the interior department deems an appropriation ap-propriation of at least -Si.r.OO.duO necessary to get this project under way, and it is known that in the opinion of the department this sum can be utilized during the first year of construction. Project Is Feasible. The significance of the action taken lies in the fact that Keclama-tion Keclama-tion Commissioner Mead and the secretary of the iuterior have been convinced not only that the Echo reservoir, the Weber-Provo diversion, diver-sion, and Utah lake dike, are feasible, feasi-ble, but that the undertaking of this work is fully justified from a business standpoint, and that the lands under this project, when once rod nimnd, can, in their opinion, stand the cost of reclamation and guarantee full repayment to the government of the capital invested, j The reports of the water storage commission and of the reclamation r engineers have been subjected to j careful scrutiny by Keclaination Commissioner Mead : the reports' showing the ability of the project to pay out also have been examined carefully, with the result that Dr. Mead is satisfied that he can go before be-fore congress and fully justify legislation legis-lation authorizing this project and making an appropriation to begin ; const ruction. j With reference to all new proj- j ccts, Commissioner Mead is rcquir-1 ing that they shall stand most rigid' j scrutiny, lie is seeking to avoid mis- 'takes of the past,1 and is taking the utmost precaution to see that none but feasible projects are approved.
