Show YANK RUNNERS AGAIN ROUTED AT OLYMPICS AMSTERDAM STADIUM. Aug. 1 (UP) Percy Williams, the sensa-I sensa-I tional Canadian school boy sprinter, J won the 2W meters in the fourth day's program of the Olympic games today, nnd became the first ' v'.ouble winner of the 11V28 games. Williams had previously won the 100 meter championship. The alloting of the places in the 200 meter final precipitated a dispute dis-pute among the judges. Williams' victory, however, was clean cut. as he came on with a lust second hurst of speed, hurling himself at the tape. Williams' time was 21. S seconds. He won by a yard from R.mgeloy of Great Britain with Jackson V. Scholz, N. Y. A. C, winner of the 200 meters at Paris in 192-1,. tied for third with Kornig of Germany. (America failed to win either of the first two finals today. Sid At-' At-' kinson of South Africa taking first I place in the 110 meter hurdles in 1 11.8 seconds. Dr. Clarence L. (Bud) Houser, Los Angeles A. C, won the discus throw, breaking the Olympic record. It was America's first triumph of the day. Sabin Carr of Yale and William H. Droegemuellor of Northwestern University both cleared 4.10 meters (13 feet. 5.117 inches) in the pole vault final, breaking the former Olympic record of 4.09 meters, made by F. K. Foss of the United States in 1020. Lloyd Plahn of Nebraska and the Boston A. A., was eliminated from i the 1500 meters in the second heat i today. Bocher of Germany won 1 the heat in 3 minutes, 59 seconds. ! with Whyte of Australia second. Paavo Nurmi and Willie Ritola. famous Finnish distance runners, won their heats in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Nurmi took two bad falls, but picked himself up and overhauled the leaders on the home stretch. |
