Show STATE ROAD COMMISSION ; WILL REAR SPRINGVILLE CLAIM AT PROVO MEETING ; Shall the Spanish Fork canyon federal-state-eounty high. . way go over Mapleton Bench ? I Or shall it avoid Mapleton and cut at right angle into ; the city of Spanish Fork, and there connect with the present north-and-south highway into Provo and Salt Lake City? 1 In other words does Mapleton or Spanish Fork get the j Spanish Fork canyon paved highway some two years hence? Teapot Dome, the presidential election, and the Volstead . j act, all these may excite argument and cause trouble in other 'portion of the U. S. A., but in Springville-Mapleton and in Spanish Fork there is but one paramount issue: i I The Spanish Fork canyon highway outlet ! j Until Wednesday it appeared as though the city of Span- i ish Fork had won. The preliminary survey of the canyon ! road turned at a right angle just before reaching Mapleton, i and deflected toward Spanish Fork city. It was understood , that the state road commission favo. .red Spanish Fork; that j; the majority of the county commission was on the side of 1 Spanish Fork, and that the federal government leaned to- I ward Spanish Fork. Wednesday, however, witnessed a decided change in the i canyon road atmosphere. Today Mapleton appears to have as good a chance at getting the road as Spanish Fork has, j and according to Preston G. Peterson, chairman of the state I road commission, no decision has been made, nor will be j made until state and federal engineers go over both route-i,.-I find costs, and gather data as to people to be served a''j'- both roadways. ' Then, and not until then will the state road commissi "'(J t decide," Mr. Peterson asserted. ' Henry T. Reynolds, of Springville, Wednesday asked the " 1 state road commission to investigate the Mapleton bench j : route more carefully before arriving at a decision. p'i Mr. Reynolds appeared as Springville's champion bef' ': the state road commission in Salt Lake City. - - " ?fU . "The Mapleton bench route is about for.-' sSia to Provo and Salt Lake City, than the Spanit - , Mr. Reynolds declared. "The state highway over lu.iccuif bench has not been improved, and there are more than S00 people on the bench who should be considered. The Maple- j ton route is the shortest. It will cost less money, and will serve more people. On the cut from the canyon to Spanish I Fork there is but one house, while there are hundreds on ; Mapleton bench. The Mapleton route would avoid five railroad rail-road crossings which must be encountered if the Spanish Fork city route is taken." j . Utah county appropr'aed $ 1 . "00-4U.e--i r vp.ji,AiJl? ' i Spanish Fork canyon road. It is understood thafthe .v will return this amount at some future date. Mr. Peterson, when interviewed for the Daily Herald and the Springville Herald-Beacon, said that a hearing would be given Springville and Mapleton at a joint-club meeting in Provo early in February. This meeting is to be under the auspices of the Provo Chamber of Commerce. The Rotary and Kiwanis clubs of Provo will be asked to participate in the meeting. Whether the clubs of Spanish Fork will attend is not known, as that city already has placed its arguments before the commission. i |
