Show NEW OFFICERS BEGIN DUTIES IN SPRINGVILLE Geo. R. Maycock Succeeds Boyer as Mayor of City. The retiring city council of SpriiiKville met at the council chamber cham-ber Monday, January 7, at 11 a. m. and made all final report's and received re-ceived the reports of the various city departments. At 12 o'clock noon the incoming; council took the oath of office, filed bonds and immediately im-mediately began upon the business confronting the new administration. administra-tion. There was an adjournment at 1 p. m. until 7:3(1 p. m., and at S :4o p. m. the council made the second sec-ond adjournment to Monday, January Jan-uary 1-1, at 7 :30 p. m. In his report to the incoming council Mayor Boyer stated that the city electric light system was short of power and that the city had been buying additional power from the government. He also referred re-ferred to the city waterworks system sys-tem as being in very bad condition. As Mayor Geo. It. Maycock assumed as-sumed his office he paid a tribute of praise to the outgoing council for their services rendered. He said he believed they had handled the city funds as they would their own pocketbook. In detail he mentioned men-tioned some of their worthy accomplishments, accom-plishments, the greatest of which, said Mayor Maycock, was that "they were the ones who directed and first- induced the Columbia Steel corporation to locate the steel plant here." , Members of the new council complimented com-plimented the outgoing council on their work and specifically referred re-ferred to the improvements made on the city park as something that was badly needed and had been for a long time neglected. In outlining the policy of the new administration Mayor Maycock said, "I hope we can enforce the law, all that are in the ordinance book. Those ordinances were given a lot of thought -by -tVo -u vmj f.'.-o'ua'l 'chem and were intended for god and if there are any that are not good they must be repealed." "We must enforce the prohibition prohibi-tion law, the tobacco law, the law against flooding the streets, the dog law, and every other law that has been Written for tlln nramm nP our city. We must not tolerate law breaking of any kind." In regard to committee work to bo done by members of the council the mayor said, "Matters that are important enough to be referred to committees should be finished and a written report filed. This should be done in order that the records of the city may show the final action ac-tion on every matter." The first official business to be transacted by the new council was to grant a license to the Hedquist Drug company to carry on a drug business in Springville, and to grant the George A. Wright Planing Plan-ing mill a retail dealer's license to deal in lumber a'nd hardware, also a license to Hnntingtou & Bagley, photographers; Snelsou Drug company, com-pany, and the Palace pool hall. There were two recommendations recommenda-tions made by the outgoing council; first, that a street be opened up from A. O. Childs' corner to the slate road, and second, that the city's books be audited up to date and a new system of bookkeeping adopted. The first matter was referred re-ferred to the committee on streets and sidewalks, and the second to the mayor and recorder. The mayor stated that there was a long list of appointive offices to fill hut it would be left to the committees com-mittees of the various departments to select Ihe department heads and fix their salaries, hence tbe making of the appointments would be deferred de-ferred to a later date.
