Show EARTHQUAKE TREMOR VISITS JJTAH COUNTY i Citizens of this locality were given giv-en a genuine thrill at 9:50 o'clock Saturday evening when a tremulous shaking of tbo earth's surface was felt Willi unmistakable distinctness. A peculiarity of Saturday's tremor was that it was felt In certain sections sec-tions much more distinctly than In others. While the shock was not severe enough to do any material damage, it is reported that the tremor lasted from ten to thirty seconds. It was felt more keenly in the north part of Provo than other sections of the city, oxtening to Olmstead, where it was very noticeable. At Springville the members of the baud were holding a practice in the upier story of the Mendenhall bank building when the building began be-gan to quiver in a manner that caused considerable excitement. A number of citizens there reported re-ported that the furniture in their homes shook and rocking chairs began be-gan to rock, apparently of their own accord. Citizens In the vicinity of Lake-view Lake-view report that the shock had a peculiar effect upon their chickens, and that when the coop began to shake they flew in every direction, and conld not be induced to resume their usual places on the roosts. At the University of Utah a thirty-second thirty-second tremor of the earth was recorded re-corded by the seismograph, according accord-ing to Ralph Gray, who has charge of the instrument According to Mr. Gray the instrument recorded at 9 :30 o'clock and was one sharp wave on the graph of about thirty second duration. There was no indication indi-cation of distance, according to Mr. Gray, and the tremors came from both a southeast and northwest direction. |
