Anytime someone smiles in a crowd, everyone reacts. One per-son may feel that he's being laughed at, and he'll check to make sure he wore the right tie or matching socks. 'Another will look embarrassed, and perhaps release the hand of the woman beside him. A third observer will find himself smiling too, without knowing just why. But the ripples will go through the whole crowd, and most of the people will feel a little better for it. Dickerson, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil C. Dickerson of Mapleton was in the news last week, when a five-ma- n crew headed by Dickerson fought its way through Communist-infecte- d South Viet Nam jun-gles to safety, after their heli-copter was downed by enemy fire. His companions including a wounded Vietnamese observer were not identified. The helicopter neaaed by Dickerson was one of four crews which returned safely after their helicopters were blasted by the enemy. None of the machines were captured, the report indicated. The helicopter crew headed by Dickerson crashed about five miles from the town of Ben Cat. The men fought their way to a clearing where they were rescued. Their plane was stripped of all weapons and was later recovered. Two other helicopters, flying over the downed craft, were also shot down by enemy gun-fire but their crewmen escaped. Specialist Dickerson has been in the army since 1962. He has served at least 120 combat missions and holds the Distin-guished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. 4-- H Clubs provide informal, educational opportunities for d growth of young people capable of assuming re-sponsibilities of leadership and citizenship. While serving aboard Ticon-deroga, Squadron crewmen vis-ited ports in Hawaii; Subic Bay and Manila Philippines; Hong Kong, British Crown Col-ony and Yokosuka and Kobe, Japan. 4-- H Club members are a busy lot. They are enrolled in almost five million work pro-jects covering home-centere- d endeavors ranging fiom cook-ing and sewing to livestock and sfety. A space trip would be a bad one for politicians. They wouldn't be able to throw their weight around. W. H. Gold-thorp- e. The mound builders, a fam-ily of birds in Australia, are hatched fully feathered, the practice of medicine. |
