Show Springville man makes good in chosen career Dr. Newell B. Weight was appointed Associated Professor of Music at the September meeting of the Board of .Regents. .Re-gents. According to Professor Jay E. Welch, Music Department Head, Dr. Weight will have charge of an expanded choral program on the University campus commencing A u t u m Quarter 1962. "We are most enthusiastic with Dr. Weight's decision to join our faculty." commented Professor Welch on hearing of the Regent's action. "We consider him one of the country's leading choral experts. ex-perts. We appreciate the fact that he is recognized as one of America's most sought-after guest conductors of all-state all-state high school choruses. His BYU A Cappella Choir received receiv-ed continual enthusiaastic acclaim ac-claim during its many concert tours during his ten-year tenure ten-ure as its director One of his first assignments at the University of Utah will be to organize a select A Cappella Choir. In addition, he will continue the distinguished tradition of University Chorus' collaboration with Utah Symphony. Sym-phony. He will train the singers sing-ers who will perform Handel's "Samson" in early December as a feature of the Utah Symphony's Sym-phony's subscription season. His charges will also record the Handel oratorio for Vanguard Van-guard Records. Professor Welch predicts increased in-creased interest and enrollment in the University's several choral organizations as a result re-sult of Dr. W e i g h t's new assignment. In addition to heading the University choral program, Dr. Weight will be involved in regular reg-ular classroom and studio teaching. tea-ching. His addition to the vocal vo-cal staff will strenghthen that area. He is also qualified by extensive public school experience exper-ience to contribute to an expanding program in Music Education, according to professor pro-fessor Welch. Dr. Weight is a product of torate from the University of Southern California in 1961 with a major in Church Music. Professor Welch says that the groundwork is presently being laid for the formulation of a baccalaureate major in Church Music. Joining Dr. Weight would be the following University Univer-sity faculty members in such an offering: Professor Richard P. Condie, Dr. Alexander Schreiner, Dr. Leroy Robertson, Robert-son, Dr. Frank W. Asper, Roy M. Darley and Professor Welch. Wel-ch. Dr Weight is a product of the public schools of Springville. Spring-ville. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from BYU in 1938 and 1946, respectively. His teaching experience in the public schools includes years in Snowflake, Arizona; and Parowan and Provo, Utah. Prior to joining the BYU facL ulty in 1949 he taught two years at St. George's Dixie College. His years at BYU were interrupted in-terrupted by two years leave (1957-59) for the purpose of graduate studies at USC. Sought after nationally as adjudicator and clinician at music festivals and clinics, Dr. Weight has served as guest director of all-state .choruses in Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, Wyo-ming, California, Oregon and Montana. |
