Show oCetterd to (Editor I!:dc!!:ss vcste sc:n h eels of vandalism Dear Editor: It is amazing to me how thoughtless a few people can be in regards to public property. prop-erty. Just last Saturday a variety var-iety of valuable trees were planted in Memorial Park and the new Hobble Creek Park to enhance their beauty and provide pro-vide recreation for many future generations. But two days later a beautiful, new ruby-red horse chesnut tree had been maliciously mali-ciously pulled from its location and left sprawling lifelessly on the ground, roots exposed, a silent spokesman attesting to the unthinking prankishness of someone. Damage thus resulting result-ing will cost you and me, the taxpayers, about $15 wasted! I wonder how many of the trees in the beautiful grove on the city park had to be replaced when it was conceived conceiv-ed years ago. I would like to ask all parents par-ents to speak to their children about the value of such improvements im-provements and solicit the help of all children in prptecting the newly planted trees, as well as all other kinds of public property. pro-perty. It is suggested that the value of street lights (about $40 each) be emphasized too. It is appalling how many are destroyed des-troyed with rocks and guns within our city. Last week, Mr. Whitehead, city electrical superintendent, showed me a light ' unit with a hole in the side and the rock still trapped inside, a $40 shot to prove some boy can throw. It seems a shame to me that money wasted in this manner is not available for a constructive construc-tive ( recreational program, where dozens of boys could have proved their throwing ability in an approved way, and for a lot less money. Another caution should be placed in regards to breakage of windows in school buildings during the summer. This alone amounts to several hundred dollars annually, too. This is a needless waste that short changes all students the full value of the educational tax dollar. Let's all help please. I'll talk to my own children, too. Sincerely, Omar Hansen. City Councilman. |
