Show Hunting time for rabbits With warm weather coming on, the sportsmen are beginning begin-ning to dust off their rifles and look for something to shoot. There aren't many animals around this time of year which are legal game. The jackrabbit however, is open to the world and you don't need a license to hunt this speedy little target, says Harold Blackburn, conservation officer. The little long ears provide some real shooting sport, and the shooter is- doing his bit towards range conservation when he tees off on old man Jack. Next time you are out in jackrabbit country, Mr. Blackburn Black-burn says, take a look at the vegetation. Notice the chisled twig-ends on the plants. Then look at all the wasted material ma-terial lying around the base of the plants. This is feed which would have been utilized by other animals.' There's no question that large populations of rabbits do damage to range. Four sheep eat as much as one cow. Five rabbits will eat and waste as much as one sheep. If you've just got to do some shooting, go find yourself a jackrabbit area. Just remember remem-ber your gun safety rules about loaded guns in a vehicle and shooting from or across a roadway. |
