Show Safety Council urges use of safety belts The Springville Safety Council, Coun-cil, headed by LaMar Miner is joining the Utah county group in emphasizing the importance of wearing safety belts in automobiles, auto-mobiles, as a safety measure. It is the project of the month taken up by the Safety Councils. Coun-cils. Years of research at Cornell Cor-nell University, the University of California and elsewhere resulted re-sulted in an analysis of the accident record of 22 states confirming the usefulness of ordinary lap-type belts. An immence amount of scientific research proves that the automotive auto-motive seat belt is the most effective single item of protective protec-tive equipment available to reduce re-duce the toll of traffic injuries injur-ies and deaths. Investigators t.i,.iiintoH thnt- 30 to 60 ber cent of the 30,000 Americans killed annually in automobiles could be saved by seat belts. None of the 442 motorists killed kil-led last Fourth of July wore belts. On the other hand, a Cornell University study of 712 seat belts worn in accidents found that 701 had functioned properly, of the eleven failures, fail-ures, nine were due to faulty installation. Despite this evidence evi-dence the public has been slow to accept safety belts, Mr. Miner Mi-ner said. |
