L ft Wins M Men tourney over S.F. 12th ' Mapleton ward's M Men bas ketball team upset dopesters to win the Region 8 M Men tournament here Monday night in the finals when they staged a brilliant uphill battle to come from behind and win over the Spanish Fork Twelfth ward 46-4- 3. They will enter the tournament at the BYU which begins next Mon-- i day and continues throughout the week. Every starter of the game for Mapleton played a key role in the championship game but it was the play of Ron Graves, Elwood Jones and Alma Jen- - sen who came through in the final moments of the game that actually pulled the game out of: the fire and gave it to the Mapleton" team. How- - ever, the outstanding perform- - ances by Clyde Mortensen, Jay Jensen and Morris Warren were big factors in the win. Spanish Fork took over the lead in the beginning of the game behind the stellar shoot ing of Roland Jones, brother of Elwood Jones, of the Maple ton team, Schwartz and Roland Hamilton and the 12th led 10-- 7 at the quarter mark. He was presented with a suitable trophy for his achieve-ment. Legion sets youth course on gun safety The American Legion, under the direction of Chairman Al-ma Miner is sponsoring another Survival Training course with registration set Saturday Mar. 8, at 7 p.m., at Memorial Hall. It will be the only class offer-ed this season and boys and girls 13 years or older desir-ing to learn safety with a gun, are urged to take the classes before applying for a hunting license. Second ward, which won the Kolob title, placed third with a 61-5- 3 vic-tory over Payson West ward in the final night of play. They lost the third night to Spanish Fork 12th. Springville stake champs, third ward, came out with Fourth place, defeating their stake rivals from the Seventh ward 61-5- 6 in a close game. They too lost to the Spanish Fork team on the sec-ond night of play by 2 points. Spanish Fork 8th won a dou-ble overtime contest from the Payson Park ward 54-5- 3 to win the consolation honors, leaving Payson with 8th spot. Tournament director Lewis Clegg and Region 8 director, Frank Buffo were in charge of handing out trophies at the conclusion of play. These went to the following: Mapleton. championship trophy; Spanish Fork 12th, second place; out-standing player and top ten as per above listed; consolation, Spanish Fork 8th ward and given by Salem Merc. Sports-manship trophy, Springville 7th ward and presented by the Springville Banking Co. by George Bird. Tourney directors thanked the corps of workers Hobble Creek elects officers Hobble Creek WBBA elec-tions were held last week with Harold Christensen named as president. Other officers in-clude Fred Childs, Frank Springer, treasur-er; Janice Bringhurst, secre-tary. Retiring officers of the lea-gue are Dale Bringhurst, presi-dent; Ed Murdock, Fred Clark, treasurer; Glenna Bird, secretary. Mr. Bringhurst expressed thanks to all who assisted with the pro-gram last year. Tryouts for this year's team will be held in the near fu-ture, Mr. Christensen stated.
