Show larch 31, I960 TIIfi gPRlNGVILLE (UTAH) HERALD Page Thret Seaman serves on missile ship Everett Hudson Miller, Jr., Seaman Apprentice, U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett H. Miller of RFD 1, Box 51, SpringviUe, is home on 14 day leave from the Navy Training Center, San Diego, Calif. Upon his return to duty March 31, he will be transferred to the USS Coontz, a new guided missile destroyer being outfitted at Bremerton, Washington. Everett joined the Navy in December 1959 at the Navy re-cruiting Station in Provo. rJletterA to tlie Editor Reader submits opinion on milk problem I have recently meen follow-ing the controversy over milk sales in Utah County. City-count- y health officials should be commended on the effort put forth in attending city council meetings throughout the county, and expressing their opinions in favor of a law compelling uniform pas-teurization of milk. I too feel that pasteuriza-tion is necessarv when the milk-mus- t be produced, bottled and sold from the same prem-ises, making it impossible to' deliver this milk All cows must be individually marked, in-spected and certified free from brucellosis and tuberculosis periodically. All equipment and milk houses must pass the same standards as Grade A dairies; however, there must be additional buildings and equipment for sterilizing, bot-mil- k. The bacteria count in this milk must be lower than milk for pasteurization.- Per-sons handling this milk in any way must have a complete physical check-u- p periodically. Under the ordinance sought by the city-coun- ty health offi- - source of milk supply is from numerous dairy farms through-out the county and state. This milk is picked up by bulk tank trucks, transported many miles and pooled together at a centrally located processing plant; thus making it almost impossible to trace the origin of possible contamination with-out time consuming research and expense. I feel that under these circumstances pasteuri-zation is absolutely necessary to insure good, high quality milk. During the 1959 State Legis-lature, a law was passed ap-proving the sale of raw milk throughout the state under conditions set up by the State Department of Agriculture. This code in part states: That cers ana uounty commission, the only way for people to obtain raw milk is for each family to have their own cow, this being impossible in zoned areas. I feel that this is in-fringing on the rights of each individual citizen to choose for himself whether he desires to buy pasteurized milk or raw milk. Is it not the job of each councilman in his city to rep-resent all of the people It is up to them and the City-Coun- ty Health Deartpment and the County Commission to insure the safest possible supply of milk, be it pasteurized or raw; leaving the freedom of choice, as granted us under the con-stitution of this country we live in, to each individual. All cities and counties must meet the state code on raw milk which is set up as a minimum law. This is not be-ing done. All efforts are being made to ban sale of raw milk rather than to supply the cleanest raw milk possible un-der the state law for those who desire it. Any person in Springville City interested in this matter should let their councilmen know their views. Next Coun-cil meeting will be held April 11, 1960. Respectfully, William J.
