The history of the sales tax in Utah, as the record shows, was born of the great depres sion; and the great depression was the aftermath, the result of World War I. The sales tax was imposed to meet an emer-gency and the heads of govern-ment promised it would be abolished as soon as the emer-gency was met. That emer-gency consisted of mass un-employment, stagnant industry, frozen finance, old age poverty, no social security system, un-collected and unpaid property taxes ... in short, starvation in the midst of plenty. What should be done r What was done was to create the Emergency Relief Fund and place in it all monies col- - " leoted from the sales tax and spend it for relief purposes ex-clusively. Since then the money in the Emergency Relief Fund has been dipped into and spent for all sorts of purposes. "Easy come, easy go," seemed to be the motto. Finally the fund was abolished entirely, but abolish the sales tax? Oh no! That had become sort of a sacred cow to certain interests. Now those interests propose to increase the sales tax . . . not abolish it as was originally promised. What a betrayal! What a proposed imposition.! Now we have another great internal menace, namely infla-tion. Prices are going higher and higher. The value of the dollar is now only 30 to 40 cents of what it used to be. Why? The answer is World War II and the Cold War, the great expenditures to meet the costs, the great interest-bearin- g debt, etc. etc. To meet this menace the sales tax increase is proposed when the fact is mat the increased sales tax is bound to increase inflation. Prices inevitably would go up. the consumers would be vic-timized, the country and our people would be ruined by fur-ther inflation. In view of the foregoing and much more that needs be said, be it resolved that the Public Arrairs Forum of Utah County go on record as opposed to the increase in sales taxes and that copies of this document be de-livered to the County Commis-sioners, the Mayors and the Press of Utah County. Respectfully submitted, The Public Affairs Forum of Utah County, P. O. Box 576, Provo, Utah. lloteA . . . Ted B. Leslie, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Leslie of 380 No. Second West, Spring-ville, serving aboard the as- - sault helicopter aircraft car-rier USS Thetis Bay, took part in the Pacific Fleet's second 1959 amphibious landing exer-cise, "Operation Big Land," April 0, off the Southern California coast and Camp Pendleton, Calif. Designed for improving the amphibious warfare tactics in this atomic age, the exercise involved 25 ships and 12,000 personnel. Included in the as-sault landings were the use of the new troop carrying heli-copters which were supported by naval gunfire frogmen and air operations. The participat-ing vessels are based in the San Diego, Calif., area. |
