Show . 7 THE PEACE MEETING, . The Peace meeting held on Monday Mon-day evening in the Council House - under the auspices of the Ladies' Relief Society and the Y. L. M. I. A. of Manti, was well attended, especially by the ladies, there being about one hundred persons present. Mrs. AlviraCox was elected chairman chair-man and Miss Mattie White, secretary. sec-retary. The chairman in a neat little speech set forth the object of the meeting as being to create sentiment sen-timent in favor of peace and arbi-- arbi-- - tration, as opposed to war as a x means of settling international dif ficulties. .... After adopting resolutions fa voring this sentiment, the audience was addressed by Mr. Albert Christensen, Chris-tensen, who referred to the former custom of settling personal disputes . by duels, in which one or both parties would probably be killed. V He said that sentiment had been created against this until, from the duel, we have come to the courts, and then to arbitration, the rule of mind instead of force. Mr. Christensen Chris-tensen referred to the tribunal of The Hague, to which all nations may come with their disputes and have ther.i amicably settled. The Misses Cordelia and May Anderson favored the audience with a song, after which Mr. G. A. Iverson spoke, saying that the time would come when the men would manifest more interest in the peace movement, by their presence at snch meetings. He said that one of the objects of such meetings was to create sympathy in favor of The Hague tribunal. A reading, "The Arsenal." by Miss Retta Snow, was most appropriate, appro-priate, bearing as it did in favor of peace. Bishop Reid followed in a brief address, saying "Peace is the condition con-dition in which man grows to be what man should be, and the means that are going to bring this about are divine." An organ solo was rendered by Miss May Crawford and a vocal solo by Miss Edwardena Parry. A recitation by Miss Vilate Harmon, Har-mon, entitled "The Bible Leo-end of Wissihecan," was well received, as was also the recitation entitled "Avenged," by Miss Elea.ior Anderson. An-derson. The meeting was well calculated to inspire sentiment in favor of arbitration as a means of settling international disputes. Alvira L. Cox, Chairman. Mattie White, Secretary. |
