Show The Ministerial association of Salt Lake, at a meeting held Monday, Mon-day, unanimously adopted a series of resolutions protesting against the candidacy and election of Apostle Apos-tle Reed Smoot for the United States Senate. In brief, the Ministerial Min-isterial association protests against the election of Apostle Smoot not because he is a member or a minor official in the Mormon church, but because he is one of the quorum of twelve apostles who, with the First Presidency, rule that church as with a rod of iron; and that as a Senator, Mr. Smoot would be bound to act first as Apostle, and second as an American citizen. Commenting upon this matter, the Deseret News says editorially: "The protest of the Ministerial association against the election of Hon. Reed Smoot as United States senator, will be found in full in this paper this evening. We have no time or space now for extended comment. It is evidently designed as a "bluff" to the Utah Legisla-ture, Legisla-ture, to prevent the gentleman's election. We think the members-elect members-elect have been too long in this "neck of the woods" to be scared by the hooting of owls. The alleged al-leged reasons why the gentleman objected to should not be admitted to the Senate, are simply silly, and do not embody one legal obstacle to his taking the seat if he should be elected. It does not appear to us that the aversion of this little clique of preachers to the "Mormon" "Mor-mon" candidate forms any startling reason why he should not be elected. elect-ed. What has their opinion on the matter to do with it anyhow?" |
