Show JAMES ECKELS CALLED Former Comptroller of Currency Found Dead In Bed Chicago James IL Eckels president presi-dent of the Commercial National bank of this city and formerly comptroller of tho currency died here Sunday 01 heart disease Mr Eckels died while asleep In his bed Tho fact that ho was dead was discovered dis-covered hy the butler who entered Mr Eckels room after hearing a tele phono within ring continuously without with-out receiving an answer Other members mem-bers of the family were summoned Dr Frank S Churchill gave It as lila opinion that Mr Eckels had been dead for some noun Mr Eckels was born at Princeton Ill November 22 1850 and most of his life had been spent In Illinois Ho received an early education In the school of his natlvo city later taking up tho study of law at Albany N Y graduating from the Albany law school in 1880 He practiced law at i Ottawa 111 until appointed by President Presi-dent Cleveland to the post of comptroller comp-troller of tho currency In 1893 Mr Eckels during tho agitation ot tho currency question became prominent promi-nent as an advocator of gold standard stand-ard Always a Democrat he became affiliated In 1S9G with the gold standard stand-ard Democrats He retained the ofllet of comptroller of tho currency until tho end of President Clevelands term In 1897 when ho became president ol tho Commercial National bank of this city |
