duties the ripened experience of many Useful and honorable years spent In high public positions filled with rare ability and uncompromising Integrity Wo congratulate them also upon the opportunity of voting for James H Sherman the distinguished congressman congress-man from the state of New York the Republican candidate for vicepresi dent 3 We heartily endorse the course of our congressional delegation the Hon Heed Smoot the Hon George Sutherland and tho Hon Joseph Howell and we Invite attention to the splendid record they have made in the present congress in securing tho enactment en-actment of laws beneficial to Utah and promotlve of the material Interests Inter-ests of our people a record not equaled by any preceding delegation Wo especially approve of the effective and generous support they ut all times gave to the reform policies and measures meas-ures of President Roosevelt < Wo unhesitatingly express our sympathy with and approval of the declaration of great principles mama In the platform adopted by the national nation-al Republican convention at Chicago June 18 1908 The history of the Ite pUblican party during every year of Its existence attests the pregnant fact that It has the courage of Its convictions convic-tions and the honesty to keep the promises which It makes Our people may therefore rust assured that no publican supremacy In the nation will mean the continuance of governmental policies which make for justice equality and fair l dealing among men rand undo for national prosperity r Wo again declare for the time honored political doctrine of protection protec-tion of home Industries and American labor If a revision of the protective tariff Is to be made we demand that It be done by those who are friendly to American Interests and not hy those who would strike down tho wool lead livestock and other Industries vital to the prosperity of Utah We remind the people of Utah that when tho Democratic party lust han the opportunity It placed wool upon the free list and sacrificed this great Industry of our state for the benefit of foreign competitors 6 We heartily endorse and commend I com-mend the honest and able administration administra-tion of the affairs of our commonwealth common-wealth during the past four years by the Republican state officials under the leadership of Governor John C Cutler They arc entitled to and should receive the thanks and gratitude grati-tude of the people 7 We reaffirm the action of the Inst Republican state convention In declaring In favor of any and all legislation leg-islation proposed for the benefit ot the surviving veterans of the republic They nro entitled to and should receive re-ceive In full and abundant measure the evidence of the nations gratitude Wo hereby extend our thanks and express our appreciation to the Grand Army of the Republic representing us It does the magnificent fragment of the triumphal army of the Union from 1861 to 1865 In conferring upon the state of Utah the distinguished honor of holding Us fortythird annual encampment en-campment within the confines of this state and we hereby recommend that the legislature at Its next session make a suitable appropriation of tho public funds of tho state to the extent ex-tent that Its revenues will permit to the end that tho visiting members of that organization may be suitably and properly entertained 8 We declare In favor of the establishment es-tablishment of postal savings banks as recommended by the president und postmaster general for tho building of a greater navy for the establishment establish-ment of a department of mines and mining for the creation of a national bureau of health for legislation In I further development of Irrigation and for the enlargement of homestead rights on non Irrlgnble land and for the continuance of tho friendly policy of the present administration In aid 1 of the development of the great west 9 Wo demand that the right bit given by statute to permanent enseJ ment within forest reserves for public roads Irrigation ditches and canal and reservoirs for storing water time Same as Is now granted upon publlo domain and Insist upon our congressional congress-ional delegation urging the enactment of such statute 10 We favor the enactment of lawn providing for a systematic construction construc-tion of hlghwaVH throughout tho state and for the adoption of prompt and vigorous methods of building Rood roads by Which the state and tho various va-rious counties thereof shall cooperat to the very desirable end that n system
