Show KILL THE WEEDS The following suggestions have boon made by a prominent farmer of Utah County in which he points out the necessity of lawn by the Legislature of the state of Utah compelling farmers far-mers gardners and orchardists throughout through-out the State to take care of weeds and other obnoxious articles permitted to grow on the farms gardens and orchards of the people of this great I State He points to the fact that there are many very careless farmers in this State who arc permitting weeds of various kinds to grow on their premises prem-ises thus curtailing their crops both In quality and quantity and at the same time scattering seeds which affects the crops and lands of his neighbor and docs injuries to the country at large will take a long time to eradicate If the farm products are in the future fu-ture to bo placed on the market of the country under the same test as fruits are now being tested and only the best can be sold at top prices then it behooves be-hooves the farmer gardner and orclr rdist to remove from his premises all obnoxious weeds and other growth which are now so widely permitted to grow instead of healthful and paying crops Merchants arc beginning to realize I this and in many instances arc al ready importing into Utah car loads of grain from adjoining States because of the suporior quality of said grains This on its face looks bad for Utah a nd if continued will bring ruin to the ocalitiss which permit such cotidtions to prevail and it is bad from the further fur-ther fact that it shows carelessness and indifference on tho part of those who allow weeds to grow on their premises In addition to this great evil existing among farmers of this country the advocate vocate of these suggestions justly complains on the slothful and unwise conditions prevailing in a good many localities wherein users of irrigation water are flooding streets roads and in the districts with water from their farms which ought to be used on the farm itself in a great many instances not nearly enough water is own d to Irrigate the farm This misuse of water not only brings loss to the fanner himself also after standing for several days in pools holes etc along the roads becomes stagnant and breeds disease He suggests that the laws of the State made by our next legislature should deal properly with these important impor-tant questions and should be so framed fram-ed as to make it a misdemeanor to allow al-low such conditions and to punish those who are so cureless as to allow themselves them-selves to exist by fines imprisonment etc etcAs As to orchards this suggestion is that people should cc compelled to spray trees no matter how many or how few trees they may have To enforce the provisions of such law that may be enacted en-acted by the Legislature It i is suggested suggest-ed that competent inspectors or other officers be appointed to carry into effect such laws in every district or locality of the state stateLorenzoHopla |
